Lets talk about Tea Tree Oil and its many wonders~

Did you know?

Tea Tree Oil comes from the Australian native plant Melaleuca Alternifolia. Aboriginal Australians used this as a traditional medicine for cuts and wounds [1]. Now it is widely used all over the world in personal care products as it is known to have numerous benefits.

Its all about the chemistry!

The leaves and terminal branches of Melaleuca Alternifolia are steam distilled to produce a clear to pale yellow oil with a fresh, camphor-like smell. The essential oil is composed of terpene hydrocarbons, mainly monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and their associated alcohols [2]. Terpinen-4-ol makes up over 30% of the oil and is the chemical that is known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties [2].

Where and why is it used?

Tea Tree Oil has become so popular in skin and hair care products due its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. 100% pure Tea Tree Oil are also found in stores!

Skin Care: Tea Tree oil can be used in skin care product as it can help reduce redness and helps with acne. One scientific study has found that 5% of tea tree oil is an effective treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris [3]. Although the effects are slower when compared to benzoyl peroxide (a common synthetic chemical used to treat acne) [4]. But nevertheless, it works! Getting rid of acne with an organic chemical!

Hair Care: Tea Tree oil can also be used in hair care products as it can be an effective treatment for dandruff. One scientific study has found that using 5% of tea tree oil shampoo successfully helps with treating dandruff [5]. Say no more to dandruff!

Although not many people are a fan of the strong smell. Tea Tree Oil is still one of my favourite chemicals and the best part is that its all organic!
